do you bother? sometimes the distance/height between strings and P90 PUP looks rather generous

I do, varying amounts of foam under them usually does the trick

^Yup, that's what I did when I switched the humbucker to a dog ear P90 on my office cheapie Epiphone Junior.

I guess what I am trying to find out is are the spacers necessary at all......don't most folk just live with the high strings in relation to PUP?

Never bothered, never even thought about them either, my 2010 Jnr sounded fine straight out of the box.

I've got a faded Jr and if anything the strings are fairly close to the pickup. Certainly wouldn't want a spacer.

Corrugated cardboard works fine & it's easy to double over or squash a bit to get height just right. No one will ever know.

I have put a couple of small nuts under the screws on Dog Ear P90s to raise them closer to the strings on some guitars. True they sit proud but you are only talking a few mill so no-one else will notice.
