Latest album purchase has left ears tired but it's growing on me.

Quite disappointed at this moment in time and cant see this being a long term listener (short might be pushing it) Waste of £9!

Album in Question is 'Gary Clark Jr - Live'

Now firstly, this wasn't the album I was originally going to buy. That would be 'Black and Blu' but I was reading reviews and some sounded really disappointed.

So I started reading about the live album, more stars and better reviews 'this is what black and Blu should have been'

Stupidly I purchased without really listening.

Now don't get me wrong, I like a lot of the songs and the guitar playing, that is until in pretty much every song there is what I can only describe as a musical interlude of 'noise' which heads of on a tangent for about a minute at a time (felt like a lifetime by the 5th/6th song), and in my opinion has ruined every one so far.

Maybe Black and Blu would have been a better every day listener after all? I will be checking it out, but I will do some serious listening to it first.

I know exactly what you mean re the "noise" but Blak and Blu is over-produced and trying too hard to hit the modern soul/R&B angle as well. The noisy jammy bits work really live when everything's clicking and you can see the band firing off each other, but on CD it doesn't quite fit.

I like it, but then bluesy jamming is really my thing. I much prefer the live album to the studio one.

I'm a bit late to the Gary Clark Jr game but honestly I prefer the live album to the studio mix.

Its one of those great albums to put on and let play through.

Maybe it was all just a little unexpected.

Being honest, I didn't even know who he was. It was his Epiphone Casino Signature that got me interested.

I will give it another chance tomorrow, but maybe it's just not for me, it certainly wasn't what I imagined after watching a couple of YouTube videos.

This is the clip that really got me into him (and seeing a short set at Hyde Park Calling the other year).

Maybe I need to give the live album a go but I really like the studio album already... So I dunno what it's gonna do for me!

I wanted to bring this back up.

Rather than letting it sit on my iPhone doing nothing, after a day off, i have made myself listen to it a lot more and it is growing on me.

I certainly have some favourites so far in 'Things are changing' and 'I don't owe you a thing' although opposite ends of the spectrum.

I think I was initially shocked that it just wasn't what I expected. Still got a way to go before I am on board with the whole thing, but the journey has started.

Some of the sounds he gets from his guitars are immense!
