I used to surf regularly when I was younger, and I think you need to have felt the power of even a 5 or 6 foot wave, in order to fully appreciate the forces that must be going on a wave like the one in the photo. 1 square metre of water weighs about a tonne I think.....

These guys/girls really are supreme athletes. You could easily be held under for well over a minute when wiping out on these sort of waves. Whilst being dragged over a rocky reef too....

Because it's a bit of a trick photo .

It's not 'faked' as such, but it's taken from a high viewpoint above the light beacon, looking down at an angle towards the sea, and with a high-power telephoto lens which foreshortens everything… so the waves aren't higher than the cliffs, they're just much further away, and not quite as steep as they look either.

They're still f-ing HUGE waves, and it's still an impressive bit of surfing! Not to take anything away from the surfers.
