Would you buy a guitar from John Lewis?

If John Lewis sold guitars would you buy from them? Over the years I've found that I get less hassle when buying stuff from John Lewis, so could they do a good job of guitars, amps etc?

They couldn't be any worse than any of the other box-shifter dealers with more musical instrument-oriented names.

Just don't expect anything other than the gear arriving as it left the factory.

Edit: if that sounds too negative… it still stands, but from the experiences I've had buying other stuff from them I would expect the service to be exemplary. You'd probably get an extended warranty for free too.

  • Provided it was a specialist music section the I would.  I have only ever had good experiences with them.

Nope. Mainly cos I only buy second hand. I'm sure they would only shift pretty low end stuff if they did, so not my thing.

I've always found their staff to be knowledgable, that would be an interesting challenge for them with guitars. The JLP image might not suit good musician sales people.

Better if Lakeland did it. No time limit on the guarantee

Mind you, the one year guarantee thing is a smokescreen, you can demand a refund if there's a manufacturing error several years later with a lot of stuff

I can see lots of mid life crisis dads walking away with a PRS.

Probably not.   Despite the "never knowingly undersold" motto, I've always found John Lewis to be more expensive than most other retailers and their two year guarantee only applies to 'certain' products.

I could see quite a few impulse purchases along those lines!

  • Definitely would, and they sell £300 shoes and £11,000 tvs so I'm not sure why people think they'd be low end either.

No. Overpriced, poor service - like Waitrose it's just middle class elitism that keeps them going. I know first hand as I have a big John Lewis store and a Waitrose within ten minutes walking distance of my house. My washing machine packed up so I visited John Lewis where I experienced patronising service and when I decided I liked a high-end Bosche machine they said it would have to be ordered and would take two weeks and no they wouldn't fit it .. got home at 16.00 hrs found one online from a rival store with stock, a better price, an installation service and they'd take the old machine away. Ordered online - they arrived at 10.30 the following day. That's service.
