Replacing the felt under steel body reso tailpiece

I finally tracked down an infuriating rattle to being caused by the string ball-ends under the tailpiece coming into contact with the steel guitar body as the felt padding has flattened and worn over the years. Has anyone got any tips for the best way to replace it - just cut out a suitable size piece, slacken the strings and slide it under? Fold it double this time?

  • Fixed it! Cut up one of those little cloths you polish glasses with and slid it under the end of the tailpiece. Glad I sorted that - had been bothering me for a couple of years. Must play this more - bought it at an important time in my life.
