If you use steel wool you should use masking tape over the pickups, otherwise you'll never get the debris off.

I'll be using Gorgomyte for the fret polishing. Speaking of steel wool though, do you reckon it is ok for rubbing/prepping an unfinished Maple neck/F.B, as that is a hard wood, or will it shag the finish?

I've always masked off the board, maple or rosewood. I'd guess it would dull the gloss and give you a bit of a matt finish?

Masking tape if you're going to use a polishing compound like Farecla or the steel slot thingy if using fine wire wool/ wadding/ damp wet n dry.
