WTB a bass under £400, probably a Precision or PJ

Looking to a buy a gig-worthy bass. I'm taking up bass for the first time, so I'd like something I can sell on if it doesn't work out for me. Probably looking for something with Fender or Squier on the headstock as a result, but let me know what you've got.

Definitely don't want anything active, and almost certainly not with more than 4 strings. Must have a humbucker or split P-style pickup.

Err not sure if the wife wants to sell it but Fender Mark Hoppus in Sonic/Daphne Blue any good ?

Daphne blue is a nice colour bit I think the Mark Hoppus bass only has J-style pickups, correct? I'm definitely looking for a P-style neck pickup. Will edit to reflect that.

They're definitely a good model to check out though, I'd borrowed one for ages and it sounded wicked and played really nice too!

Try the Modern Player Jazz Basses, pretty sure they have hum buckers in them

Aye, the black maple one indeed... I've been looking for a decent black/maple pbass since i sold a 70's MIJ one - and regretted it.  But they clearly have completely different profile necks...  dangit!!

Why not active btw? Only asking as I don't know the pros/cons of active vs passive.

I don't want active for loads of reasons: the majority of the records I like feature passive tones; active basses are more likely to be slap-funkmaster-arsebollocks; I want to keep things simple; I don't want to deal with batteries; passives are more rock n' roll; I am feeling bizarrely technophobic about active circuitry despite it not being particularly new technology and the fact that I am in general not at all technophobic.

Hopefully I'm not breaking any rules by suggesting this, but you should head over to basschat. They have loads of basses for sale, and a much bigger bass community than there is here.

If you want something a bit different from the usual Fenders, you should check out the original run of Musicman SUB basses. They were made in the USA rather than the later ones which were made in Indonesia, and are excellent value for money. You can get one for about £350. They also have a humbucker.
