I've never fitted one before but after reading Axisus's thread and comments from Jon the cat man I am leaning towards trying one on my new build.  I am curious about something though.  Is there a purpose to the design of the bottom, as opposed to being a straight flat bottom like the bone nuts I have?

Yep, vintage & reissue Fenders had curved nut slots. This allows them to fit either style with one product, though personally I'd prefer to use a proper flat-bottomed one if you've got the modern type.
