I can only assume the guitarist was drunk/high/stoned... the band would not want to goon stage with someone so bad at playing, and if he was that bad in rehearsal then they'd not be angry enough to lash out... but... if he was suddenly and unusually terrible due to substances, then their anger makes a lot of sense.
