I do like The Darkenss Xmas song. Brilliantly stupid and quite subversive, especially when they get a children's choir to sing the phrase "bell end".

First time I've seen Leon Redbone mentioned on here. Much as I like Zooey Deschanel, I'd have to say Leon's a far better musician.

Doesn't feel like Christmas until I hear Jonah Lewie's Stop the Cavalry and Mariah Carey's AIWFCIY.

 

Slade's Merry Christmas Everybody is pretty much a cliché but a real corker if you allow yourself to enjoy it.

 

The Waitresses' Christmas Wrapping felt like one of the first 'new' Christmas songs when it came out.

 

Duke Ellington's Nutcracker Suite - Sugar Rum Cherry always gets a play.

 

It got a lot of flak but Dylan's Must be Santa is a lot of fun.

My fave, and one of only three that I do, is Lonely This Christmas. Recorded by MUD in the mid 70s and remembered by most people for the TOTP video where Les Gray sings to a ventriloquist's dummy. Gimmick aside, it's a terrific song.

The other two are Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer and Chet Atkins' I still Write Your Name In The Snow. Not technically a christmas song this, as it never mentions christmas or any of the trappings of it. Does mention snow a lot though so I guess it's more a seaonal song.

I generally don't mind rather than like Xmas songs. However 2000 Miles by The Pretenders is one of the most annoying songs in history. If I ever go on a killing spree it will probably have been triggered by that.
Ring out solstice bells was on daytime radio 2 the other day. If it's a way to get Steve Wright to play Jethro Tull it gets a thumbs up from me.

And then Ian Anderson was bring interviewed by Steve today about something or other. I was all amazement.

I liked "All I Want For Christmas" by Timbuk 3 in the 80s when I first heard it. Has since pretty much disappeared without trace.
