What challenge are we going to do for 2016?

The real question is what challenge are we going to do for 2016? I kinda feel its time for a £100 built challenge again. This has nothing to do with my copious amounts of free mahogany ;)
How about a straightforward Partscaster build with three constraints:
1. Under £100, excluding pickups. This could be kit based, spare parts, or scratch build.
2. Must include something that you wouldn't normally find on a production guitar, eg hex pickup.
3. Needs to be completed by 30th June so that we don't get bored or forget about it, as seems to have happened to 2015's challenge.

I challenge any of you to write a half decent song.

  • I'm in!

Telecaster neck just purchased from touchstone @ £39.99 so I've £60 left to complete the build...could be interesting!

I've got a playable Cort that'll be for sale shortly if anyone wants it as a starting point...

    Any good?
so if you fancy a reissue of a guitar they never made in a colour they never used then it probably isn't too overpriced.

I'm up for a £100 Challenge or the Cigar box......I agree it needs a finish date though, the Mod challenge sort of fizzled out ......

Or, how about building a guitar with more or less than the "usual" amount of strings, could be interesting…...

It can be kinda limiting whatever theme or value we put on it  - but how about this for an idea

    Build a slide instrument

    1. Under £100 build cost

    2. Needs to be completed by 30th June

The reason i suggest a slide instrument is
    • It includes everything from diddlybows, cigar box guitars, lapsteels and even full guitar builds
    • Set-up is much less of an issue for those that have not done it before - the challenge can include all skill levels and needs no specialist tools
    • It gives everyone a much better chance of building something playable and decent for under £100.
    • It could link in with the riff challenges for July/August - everyone does a 30 second slide riff to show off their creation

I'd be up for a slide type challenge I think. I'd probably call it a Slide-o Berahino if the lazy git isn't sold this transfer window

I may have bid on a wooden box of some description already.   Its not a cigar box

@ttony   any input or ideas for a 2016 challenge?

I agree with some of the points above about needing an end point and a bit more of a finale than last years

IMHO last year's was probably a bit too open-ended and undefined.  We tried to make it more inclusive, but I think many people just used the challenge as an excuse to buy a cheap guitar rather than concentrating on the "modding" aspect.

    So, learning from that, I'd suggest;
    - a definite start date and a definite end date
    - something that takes the focus away from "buying"
    - something that breaks new ground (for most people) rather than "mod a Pacifica" (again)
    - it'd be good to have a prize (Thomann never sent our vouchers last year), but it might be more peer recognition rather than tangible.

    Can't beat the "slide" suggestion.
Having trouble posting images here?  This might help.

I can join in on the slide project- I can fit it around the other building.
I wanted to make a lap steel for a while now anyway.

Agreed, perhaps we could all submit a tenner entry fee to pay for a prize, something like a Thomann gift vougher or summink....

@TTony If we set a £10 entrance fee to cover the cost of a prize would you be willing to hold the stakes in the forum PayPal account?
