Does anyone know what wood this is?

I have a Tele body made out of it, was pretty much knackered on the edges so decided to round them off and strip it. Looks like nice wood but want to try and find some examples of it Stained so I can decide on what way to go. Cheers

Got a wider shot and a picture of the end-grain?

The end grain isn't really exposed yet, still has 3 layers of paint on it. The edges were very damaged so I started rounding them off. Some areas are quite deep damage though so going to take some serious contouring. Trying to decide whether to fill and spray or contour and stain. You can hopefully see the chunk out if the back too, not sure what I could do about that if staining.

The closeup looks like avery light mahogany/sapele
But the body shot looks ashy to me, I've had a few ash bodies look very much like that.

I'm pretty confident that is ash.

I think it is American  Red Alder

Now that enough people have said it, I'm going to agree with Alder.

Compare with Sporkaster 2 (before painting), which is definitely alder.

I'm just finishing off building a copy of a Alder 1949 telecaster the one that had a three aside head stock, I think it's called either a snake head or shovel head. This is the prototype guitar that Fender had for the testing the marketplace before the real telecaster when into production. Anyway as soon as photo bucket comes online I will post pictures of it and you will see the grain pattern matches your body almost exactly.

I don't know what this guitar was, It had been drawn all over and was pretty old. The headstock had an s in a circle similar to the modern samick logo but slightly different. The pickups are really heavy and the wiring on them is quite chunky.

Yes I'd say that's pretty much it thanks guys, anyone got any finished shots in oils and stains to compare? I saw a colour I loved somewhere but can't find it now. It was an almost dark grey brown and looked stunning lacquered. Can't even remember where I saw it and I know that getting the right colour is very dependant on the wood.

Well I've decided I can't be arsed with buying stain and hoping after all. I'm gonna turn it into a pallet'esque nightmare.

Have you considered using powder dyes?
I bought a pack of Keda dyes, blue brown red yellow black iirc, just mix into hot water/ alcohol , these allow for any number of different shades rather than buying one bottle at a time and never using it again.
