Best way to cut a tele neck pocket?

What's Hot
I've got some ideas on a tele body but the only bit that scares me is the neck pocket. Is it as simple as taking the neck off a cheap tele (a Vintage brand tele or a Squier for example) and just copying the dimensions with a router and chisels?

  • Router with a template, and a router bit with a guide bearing is the probably the easiest and most accurate method. A template is the way to go especially if you are going to make more than one guitar. If you try doing it freehand it is very easy to ruin the job.

Make a template by placing your chosen neck on a piece of MDF.

Clamp or double-stick tape a block of wood (e.g. 2"x1") either side of the neck, and one at the end of the heel.
Route out the middle bit using a follower bit with a bearing.

You now have an accurate template.

Have a look at the link below its shows how to make a neck jig using the neck you are going to use, the part you we want to see is about 2/3 of the way down the page.

Here's another link this one is about halfway down the page.
