abalone for inlays

I fancy trying my hand at doing some abalone inlays on a guitar neck. Not dots, something more elaborate (chinese numbers actually). Looking on eBay, the sheets of abalone seem to be sticky backed and resin coated, which I assume is not the right stuff. Is there a better source for abalone for guitar inlays?

As above - Small Wonder - Mike is very reliable and helpful when needed. I also bought my inlay saw and files from him. He will make inlays for you if you need him to do so.
