Okay...

Boss NS2.
MXR Smart Gate.
MXR M195 Noise Clamp.
ISP Decimator.
ISP G-String.

Obviously the G-String is the most expensive, and is meant to be the mutts nuts. and indeed having owned one in the past, I can confirm this. Ive also owned the Decimator before too, and it wasn't too bad - little bit of flutter as the notes die away, but nothing too serious.

I've never tried the others. Are they shit, just as good, etc..??

Ideally you'd be telling me the MXR stuff is as good as the Decimator. Because I have a credit note with Hotrox that I need to spend, but they don't seem to stock the ISP!

I've had both a Boss and (currently) an MXR.

The boss, when everything was turned up, very quick cut-off, Ideal for staccato riffing.

Not so good (but not bad) for everything else. And after a delay, cut any tails really short (even on low settings)

The MXR smartate is a better all-round gate, but can bleed a little for staccato riffing. Again after a delay can cut tails short.

I'd have another MXR, but not another Boss.

Judging by videos, the MXR isn't going to work for me. It doesn't fully attenuate when gating, which is... ehhh.... what is the point in that!?

Looks like the ISP is the only go-er here.

Surely it depends on the setting, the MXR has a hiss/mid/full switch which varies the amount of attenuation.

Mines on hiss, to remove background noise.

Ah no sorry, was talking about the Noise Clamp one.

  • The smart gate is really good for general use. Cant believe I got rid of mine...

It can do staccato stuff, but not as well as the boss. But for everything else, it's a boss beater. :)

  • Smart Gate.
    Its Lukes pedal of choice
    'nuff said.

    I love mine
I have it 1st in line so it only kills my single coil noise.

I've used an NS2 for ages, does the job well. As long you're generous with the threshold knob and stingy with the decay, you'll be fine.

  • I have an ISP Decimator stuffed away in a cupboard somewhere. Could be persuaded in selling it if you're interested.

ISP Decimator is shockingly good , been meaning to get one for ages . One control knob and works well pretty much anywhere in the fx chain . A mate of mine has got one .
    Flown the nest .

I've got a G-String but it's going back. Actually kinda crap. I way prefer the regular ISP!

Intrigued. I have the G-String and it does what I expected and have always liked it. But I haven't tried anything else. What do you reckon the regular does better?

    This thread interests me greatly.

The 5150 can be a bit hissy at high gain.

I do have a Boss that I've never used, but the MXR Smart Gate looks great with the hiss killer option.

But where is best to put it in the chain? Front of amp? In the Loop? Where??????? DAMMIT WHERE???????

I’m so bored I might as well be listening to Pink Floyd

The 5150 will probably have a lot of preamp distortion.
If it is a series loop then put it in there.
A parallel loop won't do anything.

    or use less gain. ;)

    Less gain?

Sir, I must remind you of Rule 1 !!!

What Octatonic said. In the loop for amp noise, in front for pedal noise.

I use a Smart Gate infront for reducing the hiss/pedal noise. Works brilliantly for that.

Just occurred to me. Is THIS what got Drew banned? If so, fair enough. No place for blasphemy
