How do you make an accurate scratch plate template?

Yeah I've seen that site before but the pictures on there look a bit gaudy for me, I was going to use this site instead:

The instructions on the other site for if your guitar is not listed isn't all that helpful unfortunately because I can't just trace the guard I have, it's the guard that is wrong!
