Lester gas

What's Hot

So after a lifelong love affair with strats I find myself gassing uncontrollably for a Les Paul! Think I'm going to have to scratch the itch!

I'm quite a fan of the old Lester Polfus model.

You should be aware that it will be ergonomic nightmare compared to a Strat....

Same here; I tried a second hand Deluxe in 1981, a Heritage Standard 80 in '85 and two Standards between 2000 and 2005....

Four LPs have been enough to convince me that I don't get on with them.

A PRS McCarty does LP-alike duties for me now....

That's what I'm afraid of. How does the McCarty compare to a Les Paul tonally? I'm guessing not so fat sounding?

Like this (forgive the dodgy playing):

It's probably not 'quite' as fat sounding but it's not far off.

    I'm selling a 2008 R7 darkback...

I have a McCarty and it's a reasonable substitute for a Les Paul but not the same tonally - sometimes only a Les Paul will do!

I find a LP to be very personal to each player so try as many as you can till you find the one.

And if that turns out to be an R9 then sell a kidney.

Your "nightmare" is my "very slightly different".

It always amazes me that people can't get used to what are essentially pretty subtle differences in solid electric guitar body styles, but they'll happily pick up an acoustic guitar or a bass without comment.

The ergonomic differences between Strats and Les Pauls are less than between left- and right-hand drive cars, ie, they're in the "Shut up and get on with it" category.

But yes, buy a gold one. :)

Balance - particularly when seated, the overall geometry - the neck angle always feels too steep - even on ones which are correctly set, the toggle switch is in the most wrong of wrong places, controls too far away from the bridge - are too close together and the arch of the top makes them hard to see and reach, top end access is appalling, often their weight, a lack of dynamics compared to '335s and variants - otherwise, my perfect guitar....

Lol, fair enough, but other than the weight of some and top fret access those are all things you just get used to, rather like having switches and gears in different places in cars.

Of course you need to love the sound in order to persevere.

My first electric was a Les Paul copy back in the 80s so the positioning of the controls feels natural to me.  I much prefer the layout on the ES Les Paul I have now to the ES 339 I had previously.  The selector switch just felt like it was in the wrong position.  I was playing my SG last night and fumbling around for the switch as well.  The Les Paul position is great.

I  guess it's what you are used to and what you are familiar with.
