TS clone. On the basis that it's a good shout, percentage wise.

A good guess but it's not right... Try the other classic with 1 chip and loads of mods!

More importantly, where'd you get it and what does it sound like? Enquiring minds must know!

  • Is it a Rat with diode/LED clipping and Reutz Mod?

Definitely a Rat of some sort.

That's why the cat is around obviously :).

  • It's a Rat.  Looks like a pedalparts board to me.

    I'm guessing a rat too :))

I like the colour scheme and the knobs (don't quote that out of context :| )

Well done, Rat spotters, and extra points for @DarnWeight who even clocked the source of the board, and extra-extra points to @randomhandclaps for getting it spot on entirely.

It's a PedalParts Rat, probably my 8th PP build, with regular and germanium clipping options (ie Rat 2 and You Dirty Rat), The other switch is the Ruetz mod, which alters the gain of the op-amp, making it more of an OD than a full-on dirtbox (see http://www.diyguitaramp.com/rat.html). I was tempted to put that on a pot too but I'm not sure I'll use it much anyway.

I've had a Rat on my main board for most of the last decade or so, but just a regular production one, without the LM308N chip. This sounds similar, but slightly less flubby and basically really really good. The YDR switch makes it a bit fuzzier- there's some crossover in flavour between this and my Fuzz Factory on some settings, despite very different circuit topology. And just like any good Rat, there isn't a bad sound in here. I'm very impressed.

I should really get around to a YDR mod on my RATII… these two are my favourite Rats.

It's really surprised me tbh. Noone ever mentions the YDR or Turbo in regular dirt-conversations, but this is actually a very nice way of getting a hint of fuzz face character without needing either to put up with the idiosyncrasies of pure fuzzes or a separate pedal. My other Rat has an intermittent problem that needs looking at, so I'm wondering whether to add a switch while I'm in there :)

The main reason I haven't modded mine yet is because it's an original 80s RATII and I'm not sure I want to bugger around with it. I know it's hardly a collectable vintage piece or whatever… just doesn't feel quite right - especially not drilling a hole in it, and I would really want it switchable. Although I could put it in the power jack hole, since I never use it with an adaptor.

The YDR has probably the best Neil Young tortured-Tweed-Deluxe fuzz-distortion I've ever heard in a pedal.

I'm actually not keen on the Turbo, which seems to be the popular option - too smooth and a bit nasally. I'm not massively keen on the 'vintage Rat' either. It's OK, but the II is really the one that's just right, for me.

That's an excellent way of describing it. It just sings, in a violent sounding but not out-of-control way. I bet it'd be brilliant with P90s, maybe a Casino, but I don't have a guitar with P90s.
