Without a shadow of a doubt, for me there isn't anything that sounds better than, or moves me quite like Elizabeth Fraser's voice.

A huge +1 for Liz Fraser

  • For me it has to be Al Green.

I am mean the vocal on 'tired of being alone', 'lets stay together', 'how do you mend a broken heart'.....

Or Etta James. Jaysus. She had sass and pipes in equal measure.

Eva Cassidy. Middle of the road songs, transcended by an astoundingly beautiful voice
    I'd say the opposite.

I was listening to Rumours the other day and was pondering why people go silly about the Eva Cassidy version when Christine McVie does it so much better.

  • Not exactly beautiful, but Layne Stanley always gives me goosebumps- especially when he starts harmonising with Jerry.

I sometimes find Kate Rusby to be a bit high for my tastes, but I love the harmonies she adds here: and referring back to another thread, I enjoy Roddys accent shining through as it does throughout this album.

For me the really great singers are those that no matter what is happening musically underneath, and no matter how the vocal is delivered, whether it be soft and breathy, eyeballs out or anything in-between....we can ALWAYS clearly make out every single word sung. Matt Bellamy, Jeff Buckley, Alison Krauss, Sinatra to name a few....I also really rate John Lydon who did some mesmerising work.

Always thought that Beth Gibbons had a wonderful voice.

I don't think any of these have been mentioned so far...Usually get a bit of Rhiannon Giddens in these Discussions: And Dolly Pauline Black really under rated as a singist, tremendous range in her prime One of the voices of my childhood, the wonderful Doris One of the great British folk voices , Sandy Denny Back in the archives still Peggy Lee, perhaps less obviously beautiful but a great voice

Interestingly, one of the only things about Matt Bellamy's voice is the way I feel he mangles words when really going for it! How strange

Me too. I saw them a couple of years back supporting Garbage in Glasgow, and they're easily the best support band I've ever seen - they were really nice chatting to me and my friend when we went all fanboy and bought all the CDs :). I've got everything they've done since too, a really great band.
