Most Gretsch players never touch the tone switch.  Some even remove it, others replace it with a mini tone pot. 

Gretsches are bright guitars, the switch makes it useful for jazzers.  I have a friend, in the frozen north, who uses a Gretsch into an old suitcase amp as his jazz setup.  Sounds truly epic!!

It's a lottery of caps vs pickups, I liked the first position in the Annie, ex-Marlin, gave a sweetened clean without mudding up. Added one to another guitar, v.small cap in one position, again a sweet clean and instant cocked wah with certain dirt pedals. Second position was only good for fat dark leads with fuzz or heavy drive.
