That was some push by Froomie.
Graceful that pedaling action wasn't but it got the job done. Hope he has plenty left for tomorrow.

  • I got the impression that Froomey's downhill stance was straight out of Graeme Obree's hour record position.

Fists under his armpits, forward pedaling style?

    Regardless, nicely done :)

I've heard his style described as an octopus wrestling a snake.

The attack was great, although he does put pressure on himself leading so early

  • 200 Swiss Francs fine to Froome  for punching the Chicken-Man out of his way.

    Deserved shove IMO

I think it's coincidental. That aero position is due to the preponderance of girls' bikes (i.e. sloping top tubes) in the peloton. You can't do it on a traditional frame (pre-sloping top tubes, it was hanging off the back that achieved a similar effect).

It's aerodynamic for sure, but the handling must be severely comprised by having too much weight over the front wheel. The descent Froome deployed it on was largely straight - any cornering was done in the saddle.

Not much cornering done on the track ;) Dave Brailsford's post race comment was quite telling also. Not saying that it was entirely ripped off, but on a descent like that in a straight line it's no surprise that a stance like that was employed, handling compromises being an accepted "marginal gain".

Thing is, it was a completely new style from Froome and out of the blue. There will have been some reason behind the madness, Sky never do things without a plan.

Cornering has to be in the saddle, you'd be off the mountain otherwise.

Yeah they said, team sky would have tested it in the wind tunnel,to see what gains could be achieved from Froomes aerodynamic stance.

Yes, you're right. Froome talked about it as an old school attack afterwards, but Team Sky... yeah, totally worked out beforehand.

And so well done by Obree that they banned that style for world record time events !? I never understood that ?

    Very impressive to watch
Anyone who has tried to ride their bike like this on a very fast downhill and without pedalling will tell you how unstable this feels, and probably is
Really great - I can't believeFroome just tried to do it on a whim.  In numerous years of watching descents you never ever see anyone pedalling while in that position, not least because your knees hit your hands/handlebars . S I wondered if because. Froome has such long arms his handlebars are wider and he can get his thin legs in between his hands - and maybe others can't ?

bit pee'd off Froome got punished for shoving that fan out the way. Maybe they should give bonuses to riders for punching encroaching fans. That would clear the road pretty damn quick.

Agreed, on the mountain stages the 'fans' behave like total bell-ends, WTF is wrong with them? They pretty much deliberately obstruct the riders on many occasions.

Congratulations to Froome for hitting that idiot.

  • Top win from Dumoulin, and in those conditions too. Hailstorm!

Business as usual from Froome and Quintana, and a brilliant day for Adam Yates.

Can't blame him, 2 bad crashes and then hit by illness.

Seeing George Bennett run into that fan was both hilarious and wince inducing. Glad George stayed upright.

What? First of all Froome turns himself into a monster descender and now he's a breakaway specialist....

Very canny riding this year, most unlike Team Death Star. Froomey's definitely getting help from the boys in black and blue but also showing some qualities worthy of a true Tour champion.
