A careful trace of each wire contact should find it easily enough.
Without sight of what you've done I'd guess you've misread the connections to the switch and done it backwards, so the neck hot's connected to the "wiper".
Wired backwards would fit the bill still though; if you look at the switch structure you can usually see the wiper quite clearly, they vary between some manufacturers.
Are you sure there's not a tin whisker?
