How much chilli is too much?

What's Hot
MyrandaMyranda Frets: 2940
Doing some pan seared chicken and though I could pep these up a little...

So rubbed in some chilli flakes... Then into the pan.

It was at this moment I discovered how teargas works.

Oh my god... I'm blind!

Tear Gas or Pepper Spray appears to be a deeply unpleasant experience. Though I'm sure it is vastly more preferable to being shot with live rounds it surprised me that PS is legal to use on restrained individuals. Regarding chillis, I once bit into some teeny tiny black think that looked like a pinched pepper corn, christ it was hot, it made the left side of my face spasm and I couldn't open my eye for about 20 minutes. I usually like chillis but I failed to see the enjoyment this little fucker could bring.

No amount of chilli is too much.

Chef: How much hot sauce would you like?
Me: Hurt me. I want Krakatoa levels of heat.

Isn't too much chilli supposed to cause stomach problems?

This happens at least 3 times a week in my house as Mrs Poyd is Thai. The kitchen door can be shut but you'll still end up looking like a tear gassed rioters while watching Teen Titans with the nipper, we're used to it.

I've done the chili into a stir fry thing too… :D

Discounting DIY chemical warfare, for me too much chili is when it's hot for the sake of it and you can't taste anything else other than hot. Which has been a bit of a moving target over the years - it takes a lot more to get to that point now :).

I cant eat the stuff as the plumbing complains really badly. the missus is worse & wont eat anything from a pan that's had chilli cooked in it.

Funnily enough, with all my tummy issues, chilli and chilli-sauce don't adversely affect me at all.

  • I like scotch bonnet chilli but it's very, very variable. I chop finely and add about 1/4 chilli per two people and taste - sometimes it's hot but sweet, sometimes you can't taste it and it needs more.

I don't use dried chili flakes because I threw them onto pan seared salmon once and spent a good while crying into my dish :)

Marinated some chicken in Dunne River jerk seasoning, they called it medium-hot but it was too spicy for me.  I managed to eat half but ended up throwing the rest away.

I often cook with Scotch Bonnets or Habaneros, and I have a nice warm tingly feeling in my fingers for 2-3 days afterwards.

If you ever want to clear a house party quick, stick a couple of Scotch Bonnets in the microwave...

I love those chilli eating masochists on youtube, especially when they complain of the insides of their ears hurting. That's some serious capsicin abuse.

I made my own Chili sauce for a while, which involved frying about 20 very hot chilies per batch.  The kitchen was literally a no go zone during cooking, I had to have the door and window open and run in to stir then run out again.  I can only imagine facilities that cook very hot sauces must have very good extraction and possibly breathing apparatus, because there's no way you'd put up with that on a day-to-day basis.

The good news is that the Chili sauce I made was probably the best I've ever had.   The bad news was that going for a piss for around 2 days after was a very risky business.
