Is it just me or are there some quirky problems with the board tools?

What's Hot
Hey guys - recently I've been noticing odd 'behaviour' of the board:

1. Emoticons no longer seem to work
2. Had difficulties with posting 'embedded' videos & /pics - erratic or non-acceptance using image/url tools, especially if more than one.

I've tried different browsers (Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera) but all seem to be the same.

I think there may have been some recent changes to the board - perhaps you could look into this?

Cheers guys

Rich

    @Voxman ;

There have indeed been some recent changes - we changed the text editor to one we made ourselves to fix a number of the problems with the previous editor.

The emoticons aren't working properly yet.

There are two separate batches of emotions.

    • The first you can access from the toolbar (the smiley face).  That's a cut-down set and they're inconsistently designed.  We'd like to get those completed to our consistent "fretface" design.
    • The second set are available from the similar icon at the top right corner of the text box.  That's the full set, but you can only automatically embed them in the text box if you first switch to "source" view (the </> icon on the toolbar) *OR* you can just type them in with characters.  If you type the colon character : and then the next character that generates the emoticon you want, you'll get a little pop-up box within the text editor that shows you 5 options.  Of course, you need to know the text equivalent of the smiley that you want to be able to do that.
Embedding media should be easier in the new editor.  For example, here's a YT clip.

Just cope the share code from YT and paste it into the text box - no other code/controls are needed.

There may well be inconsistencies between OSes, browsers, platforms (etc), but that was done on a PC running Win10 & Chrome.

Thanks for clarification TTony - the embed video link issue was with the new system - seems to be problematic for me where more than one embed vid is added to same post?

I found yesterday that embedding images is not easy.

I tried to embed this link:

    https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/4TReFAMTWIxdlWIPU4L6PYqDdj6q764JhiMvbfA-SbsEpiDggdkwMYpYZh21WQ3zqXmATKIpCPFS=w876-h1168-no

But, when I paste the URL in the "Attach image/file" tool it doesn't work. I ended up manually creating the <img src=...> tag in HTML view. Is it because the URL doesn't end in ".jpg" ?

    Like this?

There's a small trick which I've just discovered - add "?test=x.jpg" to the end of the URL and paste it in.

This is good info for when I try to fix the damn thing.

Is that hosted on Google Photos @robinbowes ?

I ask, because I've found that to be a pita too - and ended up using the img src tags too.

Yes - it is Google Photos.

    Also having trouble posting images:

I've found that when I paste the image code into the box, there's no 'submit' option (or any other button that would allow me to add the image to the comment.)

If I hit return, the comment is posted without the image. To get the image to stay in the comment, I've found hitting space works, but then the image is always at the start of the post, rather than where the cursor was. I then have to cut and paste to get the image to stay where I want it.

I've used different image sources, so it's not that. Using I.E.

@martinw - it tries to work out if the URL is a valid image. If it is, the box will disappear immediately and the image will be posted; if not, it'll stay there so you can edit it until it is a valid image.

Unfortunately, determining whether it's a valid image or not is its Achilles' Heel. I'm trying to figure out a way to fix that.

When using the drop-down image insert box, I've found I need to paste the link and then hit 'right cursor' (rather than 'return') in order to insert it.

I've also found a number of problems when posting images (as above) and links - recently, posting a link seems to insert a link to the page I'm posting on, rather than the target link (if that makes sense).

I noticed you use Photobucket, so this is the problem.  You need to have the image on a page on it's own (like on imgur), Photobucket seems to use a script to redirect you to view the image on Photobuckets own viewer.

I'm finding issues with editing posts that have YT clips.
When I open the editor the original URL has been replaced by image tags.

This means I have to copy all the YT clip URLS into notepad and manually paste then back in after the edit (?)

Not that its a huge issue, but if I post a comment on my iPad and want to add another paragraph by hitting enter twice, the starting letter is not capitalised. However, if I then backspace to an empty line, it automatically puts the SHIFT on ready to create a capital letter.

As I say, not a problem in the grand scheme of things, but sometimes innocuous things like this may hint at other underlying stuff, so made sense to tell you :-)
