Is your drive an SSD ? I'm getting loads of SSD failures in Macbook Pro's that are 3 to 4 ish years old. Any sign of drive  trouble back up and change the drive cos once they go your screwed data wise

It's SSD but less than 2y old

i keep backup drive on my desk at work so usually longest out of date I am is over a w/e - I learned that lesson the hard way years ago on PC.

I keep a (usually) daily update of bootable drive image, Time Machine runs at least once a day when the drive is plugged in (often more) , and my user folder backs up to CrashPlan in t'cloud.

This optimising lark's duration estimate bounces around between 3 hours and 2 days periodically lol

    Keeping everything crossed.

Update to this - took it in to Apple Store on Wednesday - they reckon either tracked cable needs to be replaced or if not that, logic board.

They are covering it under 'uk consumer law' provision as it's just outside 1y warranty.

Currently using a combination of iPad and cheap work Windows laptop (good grief going back is hard!)

Which proves the adage "Once you go Mac, you never go back"

The Apple Warranty and customer handling is pretty superb though.

mmm, I'm sure they know what they are doing but my prime suspect would be the drive. No matter though, your covered and that's the main thing

So, just to round this off : the service report said they replaced the trackpad flex cable, and it's connectors. Took a week to turn around. Luckily though, at no cost to me.
