Someone I know had their father pass away a few years ago..... they've started to clear the decks recently and came across some old gear in his house..... It is a real privilege to be in the presence of this kit. The gentlemen has kindly let me borrow the rangemaster but the JTM Black flag needs a bit of a test for safety etc and then i might get the chance to give it a blast! both are all original.

a few pics for your delight:

interestingly, the marshall has the bulgin plug and is looking likely to be the last JTM black flag made..... the rangemaster has a lovely ol Mullard OC44 in it.

I saw somebody asking £600 for a rangemaster on Gumtree about 2 years ago -it was up for 2 or 3 months having started at £900 ..........I don't think they are especially valuable

  • very cool, what else are they letting go? I might be interested in some of it, especially any old speaker cabs they might have.

The problem you might have selling the rangemaster is convincing buyers it is genuine. I know Id be very cautious about buying  one myself.

Thanks - that is basically what I have seen as well - I suppose human greed states that the buyer wants as much as possible especially when they have sniffed such info - But personally I would go no where that type of pricing

Nothing else like that just guitars - I need to go through my 'cupboard' - but I have a few 70's G12H's that I can move on - Been there 20/30 years just dust collecting, so I'll dig out what I have and see what is of interest to you - I recall at the time all functioned - I think I have 6 or 8 - and 2/3/4 had been reconed by Midland Loudspeakers I recall - But it is years since I have even looked at them

saw those 2 links from the USA - had to say they are not 'worth' that when someone might pay it

Interesting thought - as a retailer I would not invest £600 of my money to try and sell one for £900 - I certainly would not invest 2 or 3 K to try and sell one at 4K based on those USA prices - however if a customer asked me to sell one on consignment, so no risk at my end regarding stock investment , then I'd oblige - Yet equally the justification to ask those prices would be hard to conjure up - I suppose this is the beauty of e-bay and similar sites, or indeed FB as customers can go for the dream price and if it successful then all well and good - If not they can put it back in the collection - After all, they only need to ask a sensible price when their own cash flow dictates

I have no reason to think otherwise, they occasionally turn up on eBay. There's a YouTube demo.

I have had a Pigeon Rangemaster - was great, sounded and looked excellent.
For the basis of the Rangemaster value discussion, I've not really paid much attention to current prices, but I sold my (poor condition) original RM for £800. The chap who bought mine had a few of them and I know he paid over £1500 for his minters.

Yeah totally legit. i have had dealings with him before - Brook Morton his name is. He used to sell stuff as kits, normally with everything save the transistors - I built one of his Tone Bender Mk 1 kits and it is superb. Been thinking of building a Rangemaster for a while as I have a few Mullard OC44  but last time I was in touch with him he didn't have any enclosures - and I want one for the coolzzzz!

Ill say this, Ive measured it, played it and its awesome. is it worth the money. at £600 for a vintage item id say yes probably. for £3k not a chance. anyway I've just modded my own germanium treble booster to match the hfe of the OC44 and biased it to match the same voltage..... and it sings the same. very happy now.

I have a Throback Strangemaster which I have played through a Vox AC30, Gibson Goldtone and a Matchless against a RangeMaster original .....zero difference to my ears....less gain noise if anything but for either to sound good the amp needs to be quite well distorted to begin with ........worse tone in the world into cleanish amp

Well, this pair really are into the realm of useable antiques. I can see the appeal if you have the cash.
