sounds shit and thats all there is to it....how quickly one would tire of that shallow tinny tone..theres a reason why people go to great lengths to make guitars extremely well and it aint because it doesnt matter

It is actually not a shovel, it is a spade.  But it is still impressive.

1... the purest tone would come from a steel bar.  Les Paul knew this, the big issue is that it's too bright.  The string energy needs filtering through the materials a bit

2... all wood can be used for an electric guitar.  Some will sound better than others, but there is little to stop a cheap bit of pine sounding better than finest "mahogany".

so for for me a good sounding spade doesn't overrule the effect of the materials.  It just shows that you need to judge the actual materials you have in front of you to see what you can get from them.

or to put it another way .... do you think any spade would make a good instrument?  If not you are clearly back to the materials having an affect on the tone.

I will watch the vid later and see if it changes my mind.  I may start googling musical saws again too ;)

Was mostly meant as a joke and bit of fun.... Pointing out suitable tones can come from every route. Not that spade sounds better than everything

I am a believer with tweaking almost any wood/material can be made to sound superb as a guitar. But depending on how bright/dull it is, where energy is going and what its doing may mean you might need diff compnents and materials to balance the whole shebang

Absolutely.... many ways to get there and it doesn't pay to limit yourself to the traditional, but don't write it off either.

fwiw I do think materials make less difference on a lap steel where heavy strings and a heavy bar contribute a lot more to the tone

I'd tend to agree with you on that Wez regarding last comment - see lots of various cigar box cigars that work and work well in that 'Sea Sick Steve' style

That's a brilliant vid, wherever you dug it up.  Of course, Seasick Steve has been doing that type of stuff for donkeys years and can go even more basic with his one string 'Diddley bow' that makes the 'spade' look positively high-tech!
I started out with nothing..... but I've still got most of it left (Seasick Steve)
