The weird thing about vintage maple neck Fenders is that they always seem to sound really bright and clear - yet without any harshness.

Rich- a lot of people put the mellowness down to the type of pup wire used (enamalled or unenamalled, forget which one??) on the early stuff.

The riff is from Wilco's Ashes Of American Flags. 

Nothing like a bit of drop D on a Tele or Esquire.
