Nitro-friendly stands?

What's Hot

I've got a couple of nitro finished guitars, I want some stands for them so they don't sit in their cases forever. I don't want to wall hang them, I want the traditional style floor stand.

What ones can I get? I don't want to be covering them in old t-shirts etc. Even Hercules don't claim to be nitro safe any more...

Hi I use these from gear4music and I have had no issues with marks on the guitar finish, and believe me if I didn't think it was safe I wouldn't put my guitars on there <a href="http://s1078.photobucket.com/user/davidmountan123/media/DSC_0149_zpszreozqt5.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1078.photobucket.com/albums/w494/davidmountan123/DSC_0149_zpszreozqt5.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo DSC_0149_zpszreozqt5.jpg"/></a><a href="http://s1078.photobucket.com/user/davidmountan123/media/DSC_0155_zpsq9oyyecj.jpg.html" target="_blank"><img src="http://i1078.photobucket.com/albums/w494/davidmountan123/DSC_0155_zpsq9oyyecj.jpg" border="0" alt=" photo DSC_0155_zpsq9oyyecj.jpg"/></a>

Hercules GS414 for me - used them in the shop for 12 years on display with loads of Gibson, Collings + Custom Shop on them and never known of any issues with nitro - Not aware of any changes with Hercules so as far as I know they are still fine - Let me know if this has changed

    Ah, Musicman100...another Boss BCB60 user!
Back to topic, Hercules again for me.  I like the GS402B - compact, portable and sturdy. There's also the GS422B which is a full size double stand.

I started out with nothing..... but I've still got most of it left (Seasick Steve)

Hercules stands are good I added some felt to mine to cover the rubber.

I've read that some folk successfully use micro-fibre to cover the rubber too, and also that there are some Hercules stands that use a cloth-like non rubber material.

I don't want to cover the rubber, because I don't want the guitar sitting on a slippery surface.

@Jack_  Change the title of this thread to 'Nitro-friendly stands?'. It might attract some more helpful comments. I'm really interested to find a nitro-friendly stand too. Great thread.

  • Happy with the first few months of using a Boing stand, which has a slightly tacky silicone coating.  Suits my need for side-entry beside a chair.

Fairly sure there was more about finish friendliness  on the web when I bought it. Marketed for cello too.

What are the special needs of nitrocellulose?

That stand is really cool, but also really pricey for what it is...

After purchasing a Hercules GS414B a while back, I was worried about the foam-nitro issue. I had a 'sheet' of thinnish black leather lying around from another project. I made 'templates' with paper for the lower sections to fit around the folding mechanisms. Then cut the leather. Fixed velcro to the leather to ensure the leather stays in place. For the neck 'grab', again cut leather carefully to the right size and used velcro. Voila. No guitar nitro to rubber/foam contact. And the leather is fairly non slip. There's also no need to remove the leather when folded up as it's cut/fitted to avoid fouling the folding sections. You hardly notice it.

No leather? Then why not try black denim? black cotton? lycra?

Ideally I want something off the shelf, I don't want to be sewing leather etc.

I stick cotton hankies over them. Even if they claim to be nitro-safe.

    Cotton hankies/rags/cloths FTW

alternatively, marry someone who loves sewing and get her to make socks for your stands.

Felt with a sticky back is available in small sheets will cost you about 3 quid cut it correctly with a nice pair of scissors and job done looks factory in 15 minutes for less than a fiver.

Would post pics pics but It's so unnecessary.

+1 - I've been using both floor stands and wall hangers for years with no ill-effects.

I've used Hercules stands with various nitro finished guitars (Martin acoustic, vintage Gibson, AVRI & CS Fenders) for years, with no issues whatsoever.
