I love this guitar tone, any idea how to get it?

Aynsley Lister's tone as this track kicks off is a thing of beauty to my ears. I was wondering how you would get a tone like that?

What chance recreating it on my old axe fx?

First thing I thought of when I listened to that - and I mean tone not style, was Hendrix.

My first thought was a bit SRV-ish.

Sound like a Fender amp cranked with an OD pedal and a strat.

Haven't heard this guy before- thanks for hooking me up- he's a tasteful player.
Some of the playing is a little sharp in places but it suits the tune.

    Quite enjoyed that.
I'm guessing a Strat into some sort of amplification device.

OK, I might be wrong about the Strat but it's definitely a guitar into an amplification device.

Possibly with heavyish strings and a highish action, into a cranked Fender-style amplification device - possibly with some kind of mild overdrive device.

    And leads - probably....

Yeah old Fender like a bassman or something played with the neck pickup on a strat. That kind of "blowing into a coke bottle" rounded sound is accentuated if you play mostly on the thicker strings around the 10th / 12th fret too. Nice sound. I would expect you can get fairly close on an Ax FX with a strat.

Another example of that kind of sound but with less gain (most likely recorded through a pair of twins)

I think he might use rift amps.

Sounds to me like a jtm45 type pedal left on clean but pushing a valve amp. There's a pedal for sale on the forum that should come close handmade in Spain but I would double check that. The pedal I have, made by my local tech, changes the tone considerably for that plexi static electrified drive tone from clean to creamy saturation.
It sounds fenderish due to the high presence. I know this tone and licks sound faintly Hendrix srv familiar but I promise you their tone is far more superior and complex. However, thisntone is achievable for us mere mortals thanks to the simple combination of strat, clean jtm45 pedal pushing a Marshall type amp.

He does @RiftAmps' demo vids and I believe now has a Rift 'Marshall-style' signature amp. Chris might be able to shed some light.

  • Back when I used to see Aynsley at IGF he was always using a JCM800 combo, which he liked. He ran the master on 3, which he said was the lowest you could have it without killing the tone. Can't remember whether it was a 1x12 or 2x12, but it was a single channel and pretty sure it was a 50 watter. Dunno what he used on this track, but it doesn't sound a million miles from how I remember him sounding—tone in the hands I guess.
