Just use ur common sense.
If you've got half a brain you can sense if something isn't right. 

Fair point, but anyone can get carried away with the emotion of it all...which doesn't only apply to guitars.

I fully agree. 
I guess the best thing you could do is try to take a friend who's got more experience with you to give you that piece of mind. 
 But unless your buying high end or vintage I wouldn't worry too much.
