... I've had to do a proper, all-hiding-places-emptied, count of guitars.

Now, it's nothing like the level of some of the addicts here, but it was still a few more than I thought.

So, that's one removal van for the house contents, and one for the guitars.
:(

(If I had the time, there'd be another mahoosive FS thread)

    Go on then....how many?

    Life, the universe and everything.

If I count all of them, which I was "encouraged" to do.

If it's any consolation Tony I've just done the same and I'm worse ...
keep a spreadsheet and put two values next to each one. Insurance value and lowest acceptable resale value
when you count em up it's a bit of an eye opener
if nothing else it'll make you up your insurance!

Ever have one of those moments where you find a guitar down the back of the sofa cushions and you'd been wondering where it went all along?

Exactly! You need ALOT of guitars not to know how many you have!

  • get with the number
The Bigsby was the first successful design of what is now called a whammy bar or tremolo arm, although vibrato is the technically correct term for the musical effect it produces. In standard usage, tremolo is a rapid fluctuation of the volume of a note, while vibrato is a fluctuation in pitch. The origin of this nonstandard usage of the term by electric guitarists is attributed to Leo Fender, who also used the term “vibrato” to refer to what is really a tremolo effect.

    So how many then?
Can't be that many that you can't count them all. Lol.

  • I just completed the same exercise when renewing my insurance, including creating a catalogue of all of my guitars with photos and expert valuations.

The biggest eye opener was how many guitars I seem to have purchased this year without really realising it (unless they are breeding when I leave the room!!!).

    Indeed.

I have shifted a few out this year, but will be aiming to shift a few more out next year.

That's the problem with listing stuff on a spreadsheet - once the data is in there, it's a lot easier to categorise and analyse and decide.

    And then re-analyse and re-decide.

Currently, somewhere between 10 & 15 guitars are on the "to go" list, and I'm going to get down to the core 30.

In my defence, 10 are Kawais (which is more of a museum collection than everyday guitars), so, really, it's only 20.

OK, back to the spreadsheet for another analysis ...

  • After 28 years in the same place, I moved in 2013. We got Pickfords to pack and move us. They did a great job on my guitars - all of which were in hard cases except an acoustic which I only had a gigbag for Pickfords bubble-wrapped the cases beautifully and I counted them onto the truck as they stacked them nicely on their ends. The acoustic in a gig bag went in my car.

At the other end, on the day after (we moved out on day one, in on day two) I counted the guitars off into the house and was one short. Small panic on my part until my wife reminded me that we'd brought one in the car. Oops!

    Just sayin...
