For pure, simple, Sinatra-like style, with no I've-got-the-note-surrounded-I'll-sing-it-in-minute hystrionics, I find kd Lang hard to beat.

She's a proper effortlessly classy singer.

Not joking, I'd take Yoko over Whinehorse any day.

Also the thread states 'vocalist' not singer, which allows some leeway.
Excellent, I thought I was probably the only nutter here who actually likes Yoko :).

I don't care how well she can sing, she ruined the Beatles!

Much like my taste in guitar players, I'm properly turned off by vocal gymnastics and 'techniqiue' - it leaves me cold.

So Karen Carpenter wins, with an honourable mention for the blonde one from Abba.

Just be thankful they didn't last until Paul and John started writing tosh like Imagine and Mull Of Kintire.

Of the artists I like to listen to just to hear them sing, Billie Holiday and Emmylou Harris have already appeared in the thread, I'm a little surprised no-one but me appears to rate Dusty Springfield.

My favourite to listen to just for the wonderful sound of her voice, is Hope Sandoval.

She really can and I went through a stage of listening to a lot of her stuff.  I particularly like the stuff she did with Jo Bo and her earlier stuff.  I almost feel she was better when she had her bipolar less under control if that doesn't sound too odd.  Lately, however, I've been finding her a bit "samey".....not sure why or if that's fair.

  • Went to see Jo Harman last night and she was ridiculously good . Played to around 200 in Dorchester and with the talent she's got I was gutted for her :-(

I love both their voices but Anne Wilson from Heart needs more mentions in this thread.

  • Susan Tedeschi has a decent set of pipes on her, if she hasn't had a mention yet.
Correct answer is probably Aretha, mind.

Re the OP, Lisa Fischer is a great addition to the Stones touring ensemble (though I think she missed the most recent tour?).

The thread is 'the greatest female vocalist', not 'goatiest'. ;)

    I'm joking of course

No love for Linda Perry? She has one of the most powerful voices I've heard on a female vocalist and she's an amazing song writer to boot.
Tomorrow will be a good day.

  • Another one is Susanna Hoffs, not a bad guitarist either. She even has a really cool Rickenbacker sig model.
