For what it's worth, by the way, the Tascam US-1641 (and the US-1800) is a brilliant, no-frills interface - 8 preamp inputs, two instrument inputs, 6 line inputs. USB 2.0, too so no mucking around. Can usually be had for about £140 second hand.

If you don't need any complex routing, built-in effects etc then it's probably ideal.

EDIT: In fact, there's one here at £99 with 51 minutes remaining...

In terms of software, Reaper is very cheap and very good.

And intuitive, well supported and laden with just about every feature you need. Really good forum too, members are really helpful.

2 Reaper (which I absolutely love, and is only £38 or so for two full releases of updates - so buying v4.591 now gets you all the updates free until v6.591).

I've been using Reaper for around 4 years now and still haven't hit my second major upgrade, but Lord knows how many minor ones I have had in the interim. It really is incredibly well supported.

And no, I don't work for them or am I sponsored by them :D

Im using Presonus SL16.4.2 and Studio One Pro...liking it.
@spark240 I've just ordered their AudioBox studio set. Entry-level stuff I'd imagine, which is what I want, but would be interested in feedback if you have any?

    Cheers

The Presonus stuff I found real easy to use, I was using Sonar X1.

I also used the Studio One Artist software, which I upgraded to Pro version just because I wanted to use 3rd part VST sounds, but in all cases the Fat channel is great, I found the channel routing a bit tricky , but I come from a proper desk era, once I got used to it all is good. Im sure you will like it, and if I can be of any ( limited) help, let me know.

Thanks, I may well be in touch. First impressions are it's pretty usable and I'm pleased with what I've recorded so far, sound-wise of not musically ;-)
