Surprisingly, same here! Hmm I'd never once considered a 335 or any semi hollow tbh. I like the looks of the Epiphone Casino coupe, very cool in racing green.

As I have a rather lovely 335 fat neck the video made me rethink my search

  • I'm increasingly drawn to a 339- I like the tone of a 335, but find them unwieldy. The smaller body might be a bit more LPish too...

The only thing about a 339 is because its smaller the upper fret access might be cramped, just a thought

I'd like to know if you try one

I find the SG very similar to an LP just less bottom end grunt/sustain.

The ergonomics of both guitars only make sense playing standing up IME.

Just to make things more complicated, unlike @Blueingreen I really like the stock standard pickups. I went through a lot of bridge pickups and other than the axesrus purist I have there now the 498t was the best. And that included a few Bare Knuckles. The pickup I have now is similar to a Mule but a bit hotter and not as polite sounding. Works great for the type of music I play.
The 490R and 498T combo is my favourite in a Les Paul, all the later p'ups burstbuckers etc. sound nice but they don't have "it" so to speak. Pure Rock when combined with a Marshall....... probably a bit too hot for those looking for 59 burst style tones but perfect for 70's, 80's, and 90's rock.

The yard is nothing but a fence, the sun just hurts my eyes...

Yeah I'm just not a rock guy.  More likely to be playing jazz/funk/soul/pop/blues or even electronica. My forays into rock never involve anything heavier than the Stones or Steely Dan, say.  They may be great rock pickups, I'm certainly no judge of that.

Yeah, it's horses for courses really. You can make those pick ups work for those genres but they aren't ideal for it either not like they are for rock. I should add that I removed the covers on mine and that made them sound even better!

Les Paul's are so heavy because they are densely packed with awesome. Just man up and play the damn thing!

i really do like 335s (and 345/355's). I particularly like 345s because of the varitone circuit.  But regardless of what you might think from that video, they really are very different to a LP in terms of tone and feel. An SG with the right p/up set really is the closest.
I started out with nothing..... but I've still got most of it left (Seasick Steve)

I've been playing a set neck strat I made and one thing it's very comfortable and easy to play sitting down

So now I'm thinking make a mahogany/maple cap version, that could be very close tonally to a Lp if the body is a similar mass

If you want the classic Les Paul tone but with a little more comfort, lighter weight and overall better build quality try a Collings City Limits.

    Nice.

I live maybe 5 -10 minutes drive (on a clear run) from Richtone. Great fellas.

One thing no-one mentioned in the thread is Gordon Smith guitars - they are always worth a look, if you can find one. Not silly money either.
