I'm quite a fan of the old Lester Polfus model.
Four LPs have been enough to convince me that I don't get on with them.
A PRS McCarty does LP-alike duties for me now....

It's probably not 'quite' as fat sounding but it's not far off.
I find a LP to be very personal to each player so try as many as you can till you find the one.
And if that turns out to be an R9 then sell a kidney.

Yeah i'l have to play a load and see if any grab me.
It always amazes me that people can't get used to what are essentially pretty subtle differences in solid electric guitar body styles, but they'll happily pick up an acoustic guitar or a bass without comment.
The ergonomic differences between Strats and Les Pauls are less than between left- and right-hand drive cars, ie, they're in the "Shut up and get on with it" category.
But yes, buy a gold one.
Of course you need to love the sound in order to persevere.
I guess it's what you are used to and what you are familiar with.
