It does say he started off as a carpenter-cum-industrial designer.
    And it shows.

Some designers get natural aesthetics. Some don't. Whoever designed that don't.

Detailed reviews in the last issue of Guitarist (which I read cover to cover, for once).

Absolutely fascinating to read about the construction and design... but they don't appeal to me at all.

I think its great that designers are pushing the envelope of guitar design...

    However, a couple of things:

Firstly, why do designers try to solve problems that none of us face - example: switching pickups with "invisible" switches. Just a gimmick and one that is likely to be massively irritating live.

Secondly; there is a vast amount of real estate in that guitar body with sod all going on. A plain wood finish may look nice for danish furniture but it just makes that look bland. And the sculptured form just looks like a half-sucked boiled sweet.

Thirdly; 'inovative body'... erm, what about designing a headstock properly? The angles of everything make the tuners look like they were installed by a moron - they appear to be all at different angles. I get 'why' but aesthetically... yuk. And if you are applying a veneer to a headstock make sure the grain pattern matches the body otherwise it looks cack. Final point on the headstock... er straight pull of the strings would be nice.

Fourthly; grain... regimented grain like that looks like formica.

Fifthly (is that a word?); fret dots. Theres a reason they are there. Some people prefer them without, but personally speaking I don't - as I use them to give myself points of reference when playing.

Six: magnets... great. What happens when they start losing their magnetism (it happens) and the back of your guitar slips off when playing a gig. Plus also, its a large old area.... does it rattle/vibrate? Will it in the future? Will it warp over time?

I'm going to stop there... I like the idea of pushing design forwards, its just that this doesn't. Its design for design sake, and not solving issues performing musicians face so as such it fails. William Morris once said that you should only fill your house with things that are "either beautiful or useful". Sorry, but that's neither.
    Never Ever Bloody Anything Ever.
