This place is TheFB not FB.

You will notice mods call it that to reduce the potential for confusion.

I'm not locked in here with you, you are locked in here with me.

I watched the FB film last week, and according to that the The got killed off quite early on...so I reckon it's ours to use.

    I remember Musicradar.  Vaguely.

But then I remember stuff like Netscape Navigator and CompuServe email addresses.

I remember my Mk1 Escort with perhaps 50bhp and its cool (1970s) vinyl roof.

In fact, I remember the 1970s, and Gary Glitter.

I remember my very first Sony Walkman, that played "cassette tapes" and meant my music was suddenly mobile.

I remember the Sweeney and the Professionals, and Status Quo before they had to reform to become good again.

Lots of stuff that I remember used to be good once.  When it was all we knew and had nothing better.  But which I soon forgot when something better came along.

Oh yes. And how you could have a machine partitioned to run CCPM and MS-Dos as the latter hardly had any business software.

Except that in guitars & amplifiers, the "old" stuff seems (to some) to be so much better than the new stuff.

    And:

Although the UNIX shell (Bourne, or C) is so much older than Windoze, you can still do a lot more with it. And the old TECO editor on the DEC-System-10 was so powerful you could almost write programs in its command language. And before microprocessors you didn't need an expensive In Circuit Emulator to stop the machine, examine registers, patch memory, see what's on the data or address bus. And with discrete component technology, if one failed you didn't junk the whole board you just replace a component. And if your car wouldn't start you could find out within 10 minutes why not and probably fix it with tools from the shed without requiring computer diagnostics and an expensive trip to the garage.

There was a lot of crap about though. ICL's TME executive was based on EMOE, purely for political reasons. I'm sure similar things happen today.

Sometimes I feel that this place is full of a load of old farts reminiscing about how good the old days were ...

But othertimes, I feel that this place is full of a load of old farts moaning about how much worse stuff is today ...

And then I realise that I'm one of them, and wonder what happened.

  • Yes. If you're disillusioned with the present and you dread the future, where else is there to look but the past?
