Fender Custom Shop Beetlekill Pine

What's Hot
thegummythegummy Frets: 4389
Had never heard of beetlekill pint before (apparently some kind of blue stain fungus) but I saw these on Paul Waller's (from the Fender Custom Shop) Instagram and they are some of the nicest looking guitar finishes I have ever seen. Such beauty!

  • It's certainly different..........

Looks like someone from "Mabel's pop up artisan emporium of vintage tat" has given it the good news with some watered down Farrow & Ball.

Nice for an amp cabinet, less so for a guitar.

My sister does really shit "upcycled" furniture which looks a lot like that.

The fungus thing is an interesting talking point, but if you remove the back story you're just left with cheap looking, knotty wood and a weird finish.

  • Was about to say looks a bit like the amp cab I just built :)
I like it on the tele but not so much the others.

    It's outrageous!
Fender are charging a premium for wood treated by Rentokil.
And I bet it comes off and stains your hands.
They should be ashamed of themselves and exposed for the frauds they are.

    It's a lovely story but I don't buy it.
Why is only blue around the edges like a perfect sunburst pattern?
I call shenanigans. A guitar designed for hipsters.

Exactly, only your cab doesn't have the horrible mismatching pine knots in it ;).

  • Not for me but Fender obviously think that enough people will like them.

  • My first thought was they looked like pressure treated fencing- but I actually quite like that.
Think I like the Strat & Tele best, there's not enough grain or grey colour on the JM.
I also get the jokes about kitchen cupboards etc, but for the most part I still like it. I think they'd be better if the pressure treatment/fungus stain covered the whole thing, or they were just silvery grey & definitely matt, not gloss.

I looked up the wood & there are some great looking examples of it on PIN(E)terest  Mostly made into floors or kitchens of course, but maple, mahogany & ash mostly get made into furniture so that's OK.

If you think about most brown mahogany Gibsons, you could say they look like an old sideboard, or expensive dining table (though some of those would use the figured stuff). It's fine.
