I have a GT6 - Distortions are awful, really boxy. Effects are standard Boss, nothing wrong, but nothing exciting either. You can sort of do a 4 cable method on it so that you can use Amp distortion, this is how I used it. Mine is gathering dust as I switched back to stompboxes,

I've had the GT-3, 5 and 8 and also the ME-50 and ME-70.
Generally , the fx are fine and the GT-3 was my fave. Good sounds that actually sounded closer to the Boss pedals and programming it wasn't a faff. I also liked the ME-50 (had 2) and it's normally the drives that let these units down but the ME-50's "Natural Drive" was pretty decent and it was easy to dial in sounds.
Programming the GT 8 was a pain in the butt. The ME-70 wasn't too bad but it sounded artificial.
Edit:As an alternative @Flanging_Fred brought a Yamaha DG Stomp pedal along to one of the SE Gearfests and I thought the overdriven and clean sounded better than the Boss units and the fx were ok too.
Had the GT5 and the drive sounds were awful (had to use a Hughes and Ketner Tubeman in the loop). GT6 was pretty similar I thought.
The GT8 was a lot better. And for convenience it was great. You could set the control pedal as a tuner/mute, have a double press of the patch pedal for solo boosts and have volume on the Exp pedal change to Wah at the press of the toe switch.
I got rid of it in the end because I had an awakening, and now go straight from guitar into a great amp. It is literally a different world, and I have a few great sounds instead of a million mediocre ones.
