Best London (or near) luthier for cutting an accurate nut to fix tuning issues?

Hi all,

I have the familiar prob with the strat G-string: no matter how accurately it's tuned and intonated it still goes slightly out of tune in the first few frets. No probs with any of the other strings.

I have a Graphtech NuBone nut in there at the mo (and a silly, vintage 1 5/8 and 7.25 neck).

Please can someone recommend a luthier in London (or close) who is specifically good at doing nuts? I do have a guy I usually go to for guitar stuff, but I'm after a top-notch nut guy.

Thanks so much.
C

    Feline?

Not sure he'd like to be known as 'that nut guy'.

get a magnifying glass, and look to see if the string is resting on the edge of the slot or not

If so, might just need a little bit of light sanding you could do?

More experienced people will confirm or refute my idea..

    Ha ha! Thanks @Sassafras.

I've used Feline before for a fret skim n whatnot as not too far away from me.

  • This is an issue with most nuts and first positions, I'd look into an Ervan nut. It really helped on my Gibson and a similar nut comes standard on modern Musicman guitars.

    What's an Ervan nut? Lol

I think you mean an 'Earvana' nut. I have one on all my electrics and they're great. Esp for open chord in-tuneness and sustain.

Fitted by Jonathan ^^ of course

Tim Martin in central London has done very good work for me albeit a few years ago. He’s a bit sullen but work very good.

Feline & Tim Marten are my go too’s. Tim’s alright, once you get used to him. Behind his disgruntled schoolmaster exterior is a nice guy.

Richmond guitar workshop.  Ex chandlers workshop.  Feline are clearly very good but 'dont bother going anywhere else' what a pathetic comment.

Feline was my first thought too. Depending on where you are Bob Gourami (Zeitgeist) in Brentwood is well spoken of, too
Too much gain... is just about enough \m/

I'm probably the only member of this forum mentioned by name in Whiskey in the Jar ;)

Mr Bob! I’ve taken a couple in to him in the last couple of months, he’s a cool dude.

Him or Feline are my go to. I was in Feline, maybe a couple months ago now? Month and a half? If that..

Both very nice, would recommend either :)

If you're anywhere near Sutton then David at Flame Guitars is good. Nice guy and reasonable rates too. He’s the guy on Repair Shop who did the Hot Chocolate Jazz Bass renovation.
