If you couldn't play guitar anymore...

What's Hot
Lately I had been suffering with a pain in my right elbow and I think it is to with playing guitar.

This got me thinking what I would do if I couldn't play guitar any more. Apart from playing, all the time spent on forums or looking on the various trading platforms. Watching endless related YouTube videos. All that time would be freed up for something else...

What that is i do not know... What would you do if playing guitar was off the menu??

take up a different instrument. That's what I did when the pain in my left hand got too much for guitar.

I'm not locked in here with you, you are locked in here with me.

It's a terrifying thought - and it's why I don't lift weights anymore. I used to lift weights until I had elbow surgery to transpose a tendon because it snapped over my elbow bone. Now it's generally okay but if I lift weights it snaps again. The thought of damaging my arm and not being able to play guitar made me give up lifting weights even though I do miss it.

If I couldn't I would play keyboard instead. If I couldn't even do that, I'd still make music but would have to programme it all on a computer.

If I still couldn't do that life would be hard but I'd struggle on as long as I could listen to music.

If I went deaf I would kill myself.

Not yet. I am trying to have a little break over the festive period to see if that helps. I always found that certain neck profiles would lead to elbow and wrist issues but lately it seems it is any guitar.

    Someone mentioned CBD oil..

  • I genuinely don't know. As some of the other guys have already said, it's a terrifying thought
Too much gain... is just about enough \m/

I'm probably the only member of this forum mentioned by name in Whiskey in the Jar ;)

If you do go for any of the silly gimmicks that people suggest, please only do so as well as real medical advice and treatment, not instead of.

If I couldn’t play guitar anymore? Couldn’t play a musical instrument?

I'd still need something musical and creative in my life so maybe take up another instrument if possible. Or get more into the mixing and production side of things.

I would be devastated. I've been playing for nearly 50 years and it's a part of me and who I am. It's more than just being merely recreational and enjoyable to play and perform live, and more than being an enjoyable challenge. But for me it has been a vital therapeutic outlet for my wellbeing to help cope with stress, when life throws you curves.

It's also helped to give me a direction and focus in a way that's different to anything else. It's like, this is 'mine' - its hard to explain, but it's very important to me.
I started out with nothing..... but I've still got most of it left (Seasick Steve)

    Learn to play lap steel
My mate did this after a road accident left him unable to use his fingers normally

Since then he has several albums out and has played lots of gigs, including upstairs at Ronnie Scotts, so there is a good way to make music still open to you. Learning is much easier for a guitarist than for a beginner
