Engraving/Etching Advice Sought

What's Hot
In the process of getting together the Jerk Moans Signature Electric XII, as one does, and I find myself desirous of engraving/etching the neck plate.  Something like the attached pic, albeit that while in the ideal world I'd just buy that one, it's a company on the other side of the Atlantic and I really cannot be arsed with all the importation tomfoolery (and cost).

Anyone got any bright ideas where such arcane craftsmanship may be hired?

You could try Timpsons who engrave trophies and dog tags etc..

It would cut through the chrome though and wouldn't be as nice a finish as one plated after engraving

Thanks, Steve: yeah I'd thought about the local key cutting/pet tag place but figured it'd probably be a bit 'agricultural' for what I wish to achieve...

I don't know but I imagine it's all CNC and diamond cutters these days?

Maybe not but it might be worth asking.

No harm I suppose.  Pissing annoying: I'd buy the real McCoy, as it's only $22, but the cheapest shipping they can do is $39, and once one has to add import duties and VAT and Royal Mail's processing fees it all gets a bit daft.  Or maybe I'm being a stinge bag.

Not at all, paying the best part of £100 for a neck plate is ridiculous IMO

Type “custom neck plate” in ebay’s search bar. Hundreds of ‘em!

www.decoboom.com always have some cool things, though they can be a bit pricey by the time they're landed here

*edit* Ha - I didn't realise the original pic was one of theirs!!!!

Thing is , with both laser or CNC engraving , that it'll be expensive .
You can cut a cost by supplying your own design , but most companies won't take on a one off or they will charge you loads for it .

Laser would cheaper option for sure . CNC takes longer to set it all up , thus more expensive .

Regards cutting through the plating, I presume it is possible to etch/ engrave polished stainless steel, such as the Callaham neck plates or similar?

Would it be possible to design the artwork and then produce a 'mask' for a polished neck plate (either plated or polished stainless) then shot blast to produce a matt effect where its shot? I've no experience, just throwing the idea out there.

  • Well in an exciting update I finally went with an eBay seller offering engraving services.  May be a bit gauche for some tastes but, hey, it's *my* dream guitar I'm building here.  Pretty chuffed for £12...

  • of course if you were serious about not killing fascists you'd display the warning about your instrument more prominently... well, if your guitar gets picked up by Ted Nugent and he gets COVID, I wouldn't want to be your lawyer.
