The Rolling Stones have dropped Brown Sugar from their set list, amidst accusations that the lyrics glorify slavery and misogyny.

Long-overdue retirement of a song with dubious lyrics, or overwrought clutching of pearls?

I knew they would come to grief in changing the title from "Black Pussy"...... ;)

I know a few people who have humorous  songs that come from a time when comedy was a bit edgier. The way one of them put it was that if you're up there singing it, if you know that for a few of the audience an offhand joke is going to be actively hurtful, even if it is funny, when you see that bit coming up, you feel like a bit of a cunt and don't want to do the song any more. At some point you get old enough that it's not much fun being a cunt.

That song is full of micro aggressions.

I don’t think Stiff Little Fingers will be able to play White Noise for much longer either.

This shows how much I listen to lyrics. Incredibly famous song that I’ve heard hundreds of times and I’ve no idea what it’s about.
I’ll handle this Violet, you take your three hour break.

    Claudia Lennear.

Bowie apparently wrote a song about her too.

Read the lyrics for the first time today. Can be read two ways but in general it doesn't have much of a negative vibe to me.

Woke makes weak. Why not stand up for your right (to party) to play your own songs. Who cares if it causes the looney left to pee themselves.
If I had talent, I'd be talented.
    Persistent and inconsistent guitar player.
A lefty, hence a fog of permanent frustration

They could always play it as an instrumental, and Jagger could just make noises like a fox with piles over the top. I think as performance art I would pay to see that.

Boring old song with crap words. They have plenty more where that came from so it won't be missed.

I had no idea what the lyrics were about either, generally I don't really listen to lyrics and even when I actually know them I don't give them much thought.

However, if someone - or an army of someones - sat down to analyse the lyrics of every pop and rock song of the last 60+ years, a very high percentage of them would be considered offensive or inappropriate by today's standards.

Nobody's going to do that, so most of those songs will continue to be played and no-one will think twice about it.  But on the other hand, once a song does get "found out" like it has here, it's pretty difficult to make a case for its defence.

Makes sense to actually quote the contentious lyrics:

Gold Coast slave ship bound for cotton fields
Sold in the market down in New Orleans
Skydog slaver knows he's doin' all right
Hear him whip the women just around midnight
Brown Sugar, how come you taste so good
Brown Sugar, just like a young girl should
Drums beatin' cold, English blood runs hot
Lady of the house wonderin' when it's gonna stop
House boy knows that he's doin' all right
You should have heard him just around midnight
Brown Sugar, how come you taste so good?
Brown Sugar, just like a young girl should
Brown Sugar, how come you dance so good?
Brown Sugar, just like a black girl should
I bet your mama was a tent show queen
And all her boyfriends were sweet 16
I'm no school boy but I know what I like
You should have heard them just around midnight
Brown Sugar, how come you taste so good
Brown Sugar, just like a young girl should
I said, yeah, yeah, yeah, wooo!
How come you, how come you dance so good
    Yeah, yeah, yeah, wooo!
Just like a, just like a black girl should
    Yeah, yeah, yeah, wooo!
