What's Hot

Wanted to get some thoughts on a few potentially new guitars...if you have owned these or know what they are like.

these are all second hand...and most likely the pickups will be changed out for some oil city A8/A4 pickups...

so this is the list so far...

1. BC Rich Classic Series Mockingbird - made in Korea, neck through body
2. Gibson sonex180 deluxe
3. Yamaha SG300
4. Ibanez AR300 Korean not the Japanese ones.
5. LTD EC1000 (non EMG models)
6. Westbury Standard MIJ from the 70s
7. Gibson LP Studio (many options out there)
8. Tokai MIK LP

Cost wise, i want to spend anywhere between £300 and £550...and music, i play doom/stoner metal.

any help would be appreciated.

  • The Gibson Sonex is a weird one. Some say they're made of sawdust and glue...AKA Resonwood by Gibson. Not really a bargain classic Gibson design.

interesting your choices for #7 and #8      as the £ for #7 will get you into # MIJ territory

I'd have the LTD by choice.

I'd suggest trying as many as possible to see if the neck plays how you like, and whether the guitar suits you (IE feels comfortable to play, looks cool etc) and most importantly sounds good.

  • i have played the ones i can in shops (LTD, LP Studio)...but these are all ebay...so i'm somewhat trusting the general quality and feel of these models and hoping that the particular ones on ebay are up to those standard - the Gibson is a bit of a gamble i know...but i scored a good one once.

If it's an ebay gamble I'm tempted to say #7 would resell easier if you were disappointed.

BUT I would advocate only buying something you have played if it's to be your only guitar.

The Westbury Standard is a lovely little guitar. All mahogany, set-neck construction and originally fitted with DiMarzio pickups.
I owned one many years ago, and if one came my way again I would happily accept.

Also, you should be able to get it for under 300 quid!

They're utter crap. The body is made of a composite material, heavy and toneless, the necks are poorly made, they often have bad fretting, and the stock pickups are junk (I know you would replace them anyway).

Probably Gibson's low point of guitar design and quality, perhaps with the exception of the Corvus... but it's a close call.

    I would get the Westbury.

    .
That's actually slightly incorrect - they are in fact reconstituted crap!

Some people say that a Gibson logo is worth a couple of hundred quid on top of the price (based on quality) of any guitar. Which is probably right since a Sonex is "worth" about £250 :).

Seriously, those Indonesian-made Epi Specials that sell for £99 brand new are better guitars.

just imagine...that natural finish mockingbird with your double cream A8 and A4 pickups in it...especially if that mockingbird goes for less than 300

Another vote for the Westbury. It's a lot of guitar for the money.

I'd go for some kind of MIJ Les Paul.

Steer clear of the Sonex, they suck.

  • I had a Sonex for a while and it was (amazingly) quite nice to play. Better still, the gap between the neck and body proved a great place to keep a pack of Polos.

Any of the others would be a much better bet - try for MIJ LP as suggested...
