Lemmy
Edit: yes, I know Lemmy's a singing bassist, but if ever any musician were core to their band's sound and image, it's him.
As for "when am I ready?" You'll never be ready. It works in reverse, you become ready by doing it. - pmbomb
John Myung is a big part of Dream Theatre's sound.
John Paul Jones.
I must admit I haven't really enjoyed Metallica live nearly as much since Jason left.

Paul McCartney
That or Willie Dixon would be the wind at my back.
Here is your chance to laugh back. I'm going to nominate Bill Wyman. He was the bass players' bass player. Never, ever obvious or up-front or fancy, always unobtrusive, always concerned only to make the band sound good. Mick and Keef and and the other Mick (Taylor) have all been great in their different ways, but more than a little of their greatness comes down to having the peerless Bill Wyman making it all possible for them. (And you can say exactly the same about Charlie - Watts and Wyman were the perfect team.)
Joe Dart
Bernard Edwards
(and as for the Ox - as stated, The Who would not have sounded like them without him. Not by a long way. Just because a great session player can come in and play his stuff, that doesn't mean they could have written it).
I’m so bored I might as well be listening to Pink Floyd
no one listens to them…
Same can be said for Pete Steele. Type O Negative just wouldn't be him without him.
Mark King too. - TBH loads of people could have sung that, but without MK's hammer of a right thumb they would not have been the same band.
