That's what I've got (well, a 2x12" only running one speaker), and it sounds great with all the dirt coming from pedals. Still too loud for the house when you wind it up, mind, so I've got an AMT PE-15 reactive load that has a 10% output (ie 10% of the power goes to the cab, the rest is eaten by the load).
That very clever bit of kit will get a Plexi all the way down to line level and then use a clean / fat power amp to get it back up to where you want it.
You can have a plexi, fully dimed, and have it whisper quiet then.
The Fryette, whatever cab you want, and whatever head you want will do it.
You can even dime a plexi and use it with a 1x12 with only a Greenback (25W) in it, as long as you don't crank the PS-2 itself.
I’m so bored I might as well be listening to Pink Floyd
The enjoyment of the process, the learning along the way, building something that you can change and tweak to sound exactly the way you want it, just because you can etc

Im looking for a 1x12 combo - it will only hber home use. with some select pedals BUT Im looking for the one that sounds right regardless of the volume it sounds right at. I have used - and am getting again - a PS2a (which will double as the power amp for my AFX) anyway - and Ill use that to use whatever that amp is at the right volume for my room.
The build has given me the confident to now do a non kit Tweed deluxe.
So, I was thinking, has nobody made one because it cant actually be done? Does tube tech and amp circuitry not permit low volume amps with big speakers?
Imagine if you could walk into PMT or Andersons and buy an all tube amp combo in a decent cab with a 12'' speaker that you could take home and crank straight out of the box without any neighbour annoyance at all?
Would that not be splendid?
I've got an MJW Roadstar Twin which has separate gain and volume controls for each channel as well as a global master volume and built in attenuator. It's around 20 watts I think.
I find that while it's happiest at louder volumes, it still sounds very good turned down a bit and using the attenuator to take the volume down a bit.
I've never been totally happy with using attenuators to take volume down substantially (even fairly expensive reactive ones) as I think a lot of the sound and feel of an amp comes from the speaker moving quite a bit of air, and that only happens at reasonably loud volumes (just about ok for home use in a detached house).
My Laney has a 5 watt and 0.5 watt output and it sounds far better on the 5 watt setting even at broadly similar volumes
Can't tell you who built it, but it does a pretty good impression of a JCM 800, through a 4×12, with all knobs half way up, in my first floor flat, with no complaints.
Not quite whisper quiet, but it does go lower.
I have seen similar things on ebay, and I think they are heavily influenced by Rob Robinettes stuff.
