BBC Ultimate British group

What's Hot
stufisherstufisher Frets: 960
I've had a quick look to see if this has been mentioned already, elsewhere on tFB and can't see anything so I thought I'd draw attention to it.

Apologies, if I've missed something and duplicated a thread.

Anyway, Auntie Beeb in its wisdom seems to run these voting polls regularly and then share the results in a compilation programme at some point, do I'll be interested to see the outcome of this one.

I'm gonna mull this over for a day or so then vote ... I haven't even read the rules/spiel yet but here's the link in case you are remotely interested and wish to vote, or even just watch for the results:

    No Status Quo (118 million record sales) but Bananarama included (30 million sales). Odd choices.

    I’ve voted

    Beatles
    Stones
    Pink Floyd
    Stone Roses
    Radiohead

    but Police, dire straits, kinks, smiths and the jam were equally worthy of a place.

    Few funny ones there.  I’m not sure you can call The Police a British band, Stewart Copeland’s an American.  Same goes for Fleetwood Mac, unless you’re going to specify Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac.

  • Actually quite a few acts there that I am torn between. I am pleasantly surprised.

    Bananarama, though?!

  • What an absolutely uninspiring and unimpressive short list. Zero interest.

    WINGS

    All Saints

    Take That (with Robbie, what a supergroup!)

    Simply Red.

    Why bother voting when it's so obvious?
    Ten years too late and still getting it wrong

    To be fair it’s the now defunct (to quote RadMac) Radio 2 list

    Predictions for the final top 5 rather than your favourites? I would assume a top 4 of Beatles, Stones, Queen and Oasis in some order, but much harder to guess who rounds it out.

    Ok I played.

    Difficult as there’s ones that pretty much pick themselves for me despite not necessarily being bands I would listen to much but somehow know a big old volume of their work.

    They probably thought New Order would cover it, although I'd argue Joy Division were more influential ove the decades. I voted for New Order anyway!

    Maiden and Sabbath should definitely be on there too.

    He might be but the band was formed in London. Virtually all of the songs are written by Sting. I think Copeland even went to school in England. The Police are a British band.

    Yeah I think the whole Copeland family lived here during part of Stewarts teenage years, at least that's what I recall from his Rockenteurs interview.

    As a foreigner, I don't get a vote. But if I did, well any such list that doesn't start with:

    * The Stones
    * The Beatles, and
    * The Who

    would be laughable. For the final two places, I'm torn between

    * 10cc
    * The Police, and
    * Fleetwood Mac

    Nonsense. They are both plenty "British enough" to pass muster.

    However there is one inclusion so unexpected that it is hilariously funny - the Bee Gees. Yep, they were born in England, but  they were very much an Australian band for the first half of their long career, then moved to the US and became very much an American band.

    Still, where do you draw a line? Put it this way, it would never, ever have occurred to me to call the Bee Gees "British", and it has never, ever occurred to me to call Fleetwood Mac and the Police anything else.
