Christmas songs!

What's Hot
Ok so we have a favourite christmas films thread, why not a christmas song thread?

I'll kick it off with my three favourites:

Chris Rea - Driving home for Christmas
Baby it's cold outside (I like the zooey Deschanel and Leon Redbone Version)

and this....

The Pogues - Fairytale of New York, as much as it's over played, is my definitive Christmas Song.

There ain't no Santa upon the evening stage - Captain Beefheart

Christmas card from a Hooker in Minneapolis - Tom Waits

Unfortunately neither gets played endlessly at my local supermarket during the run-up to Christmas.

Oh, and Fairy tale of New York. I just love the way that Shane McGowan technically can't sing, and how Kirsty McColl's voice just lifts the whole song when she comes in.
I play guitar because I enjoy it rather than because I’m any good at it

  • Despite my outward lack of festive cheer (Mrs F refers to me as The Grinch) I have been enjoying the annual outing of our Now That's What I Call Xmas CD. Having said this, one track that always has me leaping for the off button is Paul McCartney's Wonderful Christmastime. What a load of utter toss from arguably the best songwriter of the twentieth century. It doesn't even have the excuse of being a Wings track! Sounds like something he knocked off in 5 minutes whilst trying out a new synthesizer. :-&

    My top ten (I think)...

Greg Lake - I Believe In Father Christmas
John Lennon - Happy Xmas War Is Over
Jona Lewie - Stop The Cavalry
Kate Bush - December Will Be Magic Again
Mariah Carey - All I Want For Christmas Is You
Pogues & Kirsty MacColl - Fairytale Of New York (my favourite)
Slade - Merry Xmas Everybody (the definitive Christmas song)
St. Etienne - I Was Born On Christmas Day
    Wham! - Last Christmas
Wizzard - I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day (the other definitive one)

    And three nearly-Christmas songs…

East 17 - Stay Another Day
Frankie Goes To Hollywood - The Power Of Love
Jethro Tull - Ring Out Solstice Bells

"Take these three items, some WD-40, a vise grip, and a roll of duct tape. Any man worth his salt can fix almost any problem with this stuff alone." - Walt Kowalski

"Only two things are infinite - the universe, and human stupidity. And I'm not sure about the universe." - Albert Einstein

Not heard that one. Seems a bit grim for an Xmas song?

Although I like some Christmas films, I find I almost puke every time I hear a Christmas song, so apologies for this one...Im sure you've all heard it.

I hate Mumford and Sons, but I quite like Winter Winds.

The Pogues, Fairytale of New York is a classic one for me as well. Wis'd Joneve.

I can't help about the shape I'm in, I can't sing I ain't pretty and my legs are thin

But don't ask me what I think of you, I might not give the answer that you want me to

That xmas tune The Darkness did a few years ago is quality. And not in an ironic way either. Its just everything a daft xmas song should be.

    Noise, randomness, ballistic uncertainty.

  • FTONY is my favourite to do live. Works amazingly well with 3-part harmonies. One of my absolute favourite songs to play at the end of a night.

FTONY is a great song. Sick to f*cking death of it though.

  • I generally don't mind rather than like Xmas songs. However 2000 Miles by The Pretenders is one of the most annoying songs in history. If I ever go on a killing spree it will probably have been triggered by that.
Ring out solstice bells was on daytime radio 2 the other day. If it's a way to get Steve Wright to play Jethro Tull it gets a thumbs up from me.
