I keep getting spam emails for penis enlargement devices.
I can't believe they know so much about my medical records.

I get more annoyed with the cookie consent on every single website. Which moron brought that law in? It's the internet, there are gonna be cookies.
I always wondered about this.  I am not sure why it’s not a browser based disclaimer rather than a website specific one
@WezV thinking about it - maybe because the browser’s just a vehicle for storing cookies (amongst many other things) but the number and content of the cookies is dictated by the website?

Just the other day, a girl at work was talking about keeping chickens.  She has never researched it online.
Next time she goes online, she gets bombarded with ads for eggloos etc.
Turns out that her iPhone was actually listening to the conversation she was having and responded accordingly.... You need to turn off the mic apparently.

I didn't even know this was a thing?
Did she have Siri enabled? I can understand it if she did - although it's still something that would surprise most iPhone users, I'm sure - but if it was just listening to ambient noise without it turned on that's far more worrying.
I've never googled anything about dentistry but am currently regularly visiting my dentist regarding gum problems. Cue loads of sidebar ads on my facebook feed for dental practices in Eastern Europe.

Is it a coincidence that this has only started happening in the few months since I got my first proper smartphone with GPS?
For iphones, go to settings and check your mic settings and permissions. The only app I have that is allowed to use the mic is Shazam. For GPS stuff check your apps that want to know your location, or turn the GPS off completely if you don't need it.

Ublock Origin for PCs is essential imo for viewing the internet. Adverts pay for the internet but the agencies have taken the piss so I've installed adblockers which enable the claimed speeds of my ISP and frees up my data allowance on the phone to stuff I actually want to see, not chew through it with shit the advertisers want me to see instead.  Some say adblockers are a form of theft, but so is stealing data allowances and slowing of speeds.

If they want to allow cookies from certain sites and not from others, I guess. I suspect it was designed to give the user a greater sense of security and empowerment.

To to be honest, I reckon people just largely ignore it, or are super-paranoid and block everything. The latter type of user being a royal pain in the arse for those of us making a living coding web stacks.

The latest iOS and Mac OS can prevent cross-site tracking now. No more of the stuff you looked at appearing as adverts on every other site you go on. Best update I’ve ever received.

I just checked mine on my phone to double check it was enabled - it was - but also saw that camera and microphone access was allowed! Not now it isn't... why would Safari need camera and microphone access?

The internet started going downhill around the year 2000, or thereabouts.

It’s intended for websites that can stream audio and/or video, such as web-based versions of Skype, Google Hangouts, etc.

    Things change. Stuff develops.

I first started regularly using the internet in 92/93 - I remember as HTML developed and browsers changed most of the usenet regulars thought the key players had "sold out"

    Lol.

I was there too when the internet was a new frontier, free from regulation and commercial exploitation. It didn't last long though.

Just to drag this one up again.  I read the "What did your parents do for you" thread and since @Danny1969 's story of his dad, my Facebook feed is trying to sell me caravans.

    Goddammit.

It might be my story, or it could be you are heading towards that age where caravanning, beige slacks and early nights are all appealing :)

@Danny1969 - you clearly know me eerily well ;)

It's still a great story by the way!
